Mac Lehose Trail - Day 4 - Section 6/7

Distance: 11.8 km
Time: 4:57 hr
Elevation gain: 1'013 m
Elevation loss: 775 m

We spent the night in a hotel in Mongkok, as there were no campsites available at the end of section 5 and it was too late to finish section 6 for another 11km. This pushed our plan of hiking the full trail in 5 days to 6days. The hotel room was really dirty and infested with cockroaches and had the slowest elevators possible. It took us a full hour to head down to grab water and breakfast, head back up to get our stuff and back down.. That’s why we only made it to the bus station at 9:30am which put us at the trail at 11am.

Section 6

Section 7

Section 6 is the so-called monkey section, where a lot of wild monkeys can be seen along the trail. This section is also completely paved as it is quite popular. Before heading out, we made sure that all of our food is secured in our backpack and no food is visible to the monkey. There are a lot of sign telling people to not feed the monkey as they will get used to the food then and get more aggressive. Seeing the monkeys was quite interesting and sometimes scary. There were just so many and you just walk right past them. Sometimes they were also fighting over something. Overall, I was quite happy when the section was over.

Section 7 involves climbing Needle Hill. It is a fairly steep mountain with a lot of stairs. On top of that, we hiked the mountain during lunch time and the sun was out with no clouds or shadow blocking it. We were sweating so much, it was just too hot. On top of Needle Hill we only had a quick break as there was absolutely no shadow. The first part of the descend is quite steep, but stairs ease the walk. After about 20min descending, we finally made it into a forest with shady spots and we did a nice break. Then there was a paved section again that lead the way to an even higher mountain than Needle Hill. However, as the ascend was flat, it was an easy ascend.

Going down involved a lot of stairs again and he had descend another 200meters before reaching our campground for the night. The campground had a nice restroom and tap water water which was very convenient. The campground was completely empty and we set up our camp. At around 11pm once we were already asleep a big group of people started setting up their tents on the campground. In the morning we saw that they all set up their tent directly around our tent :) They were really loud setting up their camp.
